Anita Raye Payer

Anita Raye Payer, 65 of Wagner Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2012, at St. John Catholic Church in Wagner, with burial in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be 12 noon to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner, followed by a 7 p.m. rosary/wake service at the church.

Anita Raye Payer, daughter of Elmer and Edna (Wiechmann) Herbert, was born February 6, 1947 at Mariemont, OH. She died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at the Wagner Community Memorial Hospital. Raye attained the age of 65 years, three months and 10 days.

Raye graduated from Wagner High School. She married Wallace John Payer on February 6, 1967 at Vermillion. They made their home in Wagner and started Payer Truck LIne. Wally and Raye ran this business for 44 years, retiring in 2011.

Raye was a member of St. John Catholic Church and its January Band. She also was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Raye was an avid gardener, always planting more and more. She loved cactus in her house and seeding milkweeds to attract butterflies. Raye will be remembered as a devoted Mom and Grandma.

Thankful for having shared her life are her husband, Wallace of Wagner; five children: Jeff and wife Jodi of Yankton and their children: Logan, Lance and Madeline; Joshua and wife Nalini of Sioux Falls and their children: Alicia and Tyler; Rhiana Martinson and husband Rob of Chanhassen, MN and their children: Ethan and Elsa; Jeremy of Sioux Falls; and Waylon of Yankton and his children: Evan, Dylan and Gabrielle; sister, Bonita Kaye Asper of Sioux Falls; and many cousins, relatives and friends.

Raye was preceded in death by her father, Elmer; mother, Edna Herbert Uecker; brother, Gene Herbert; and step father, James Uecker.
