Doris J. Voigt, 92 of Avon
Her funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Avon, with burial in the church cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation will be at the church Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by a prayer service. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel of Avon is in charge of the arrangements.
Doris Jeannette Voigt, daughter of Merton and Grace (Crittenden) Hinckley, was born August 3, 1920 at Armour, SD. She died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall. Doris attained the age of 92 years, 11 months and four days.
Doris joined a family of five brothers. At a young age, due to the illness of her mother, she went to live with her Uncle and Aunt Elmer and Charlotte Edwards in rural Armour. Doris graduated in 1938 and attended SDSU where she received her degree in Home Economics. After graduation, she taught in Delmont and Avon. While teaching in Avon, she met a young farmer named Milton Voigt. They were married May 26, 1944. Doris took a break from teaching while raising her seven children. After her youngest was in grade school, Doris taught for one year at Lake Point 92 Country School, two years at Springfield High School and Tripp High School for 17 years.
Milton and Doris farmed in the Avon area and moved into town in the fall of 1997. Due to failing health, both of them became residents of the Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall. Milton died December 19, 2005.
Doris was a member of the First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Fellowship. Doris also was a member of the Nova Neighbors, Reading Club and Extension Club.
Doris loved gardening and flowers, selling Avon products, reading and doing crossword puzzles.
Thankful for having shared her life are her children: Kenneth of Armour; Janice Wagner of Hot Springs: Wallace and wife Deb of Avon; Bruce of Tyndall; Bev Archambeau of Ft. Meade; and Brenda Tappendorf of Box Elder; 17 grandchildren: Monica Rotert, Dean Voigt, Robert Wagner, Janelle Dorr, Jolene Yasar, Amy Yost, Nikki McMillin, Steven Ferwerda, Trisha Ferwerda, Joe Voigt, Josh Voigt, Kari Voigt, Jennifer Brennan, Jessica Carda, Jillian Cordova, Christina Voigt, Ryan Voigt; 14 great grandchildren: a sister-in-law Alida Hinckley of Armour; and many nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Milton; parents; two daughters: Belinda who died in infancy and Barbara in 2011; daughter-in-law Barb (Zilla) Voigt in 2012; grandson Levi Voigt in 2007; and her five brothers: Allen, James, Everett, Donald and Wayne.
